Most FC 27 squads feel better the moment the back line stops giving away cheap chances. That's why I'd put a decent chunk of FC 27 Coins into defenders before chasing another fancy attacker. A reliable defence buys you breathing room. You can recycle the ball, let the midfield settle, and survive those messy matches where every rebound seems to fall for the other guy. Ratings matter, sure, but pace, body type, reach, passing and work rate matter more once the match starts.

Pick Centre-Backs That Cover Each Other

The easiest mistake is using two similar centre-backs just because both have big numbers on the card. One should be the stopper. Tall, strong, hard to move in a shoulder challenge, good in the air. The other needs recovery pace and sharp defensive awareness. Saliba is great when you want that quick cover player. Van Dijk still gives you presence around crosses. Gabriel, Pacho and Marquinhos can all work too, depending on your budget and how high you push your line.

Don't just look at pace, though. Watch how a player turns after missing a tackle. Some defenders feel planted for half a second, and that's enough for a quick striker to get through. If you play a high line, put the faster CB on the side facing the opponent's quickest forward. It sounds small. In practice, it saves loads of those horrible one-on-one moments. Also, use your stronger CB near the side where crosses usually come from.

What The Current Defensive Trend Gets Wrong

The Meta: Everybody runs rapid full-backs and sends both beyond midfield.

The Snag: One loose pass leaves slow centre-backs facing a sprint.

The Fix: Keep one full-back home and switch through midfield first.

Reality check: A shiny defender won't rescue you if you drag both centre-backs toward every runner.

A Quick Way To Compare Defensive Roles

Stop Letting Full-Backs Create Your Problems

Hakimi can be brilliant on the right because he gets back fast, but he's not a magic answer if you keep forcing passes down that side. Nuno Mendes gives similar recovery on the left. The real choice is about your shape. If both full-backs attack, your midfield has to cover properly. A holding midfielder who stays central can make that work. Without one, you'll notice huge gaps near the touchline every time possession changes hands.

A lot of players are wondering whether a slower, stronger CB still works once opponents start spamming direct passes behind the line.

Yeah, but only with cover. Drop the line a little, keep a quick partner nearby, and don't rush out blindly.

Spend For The Whole Unit

You'll get more from an even defensive unit than from one massive purchase and three weak links. Start with the position that keeps costing goals. Maybe it's a centre-back who can't recover. Maybe your left-back gets caught too high. Maybe the actual issue is a CDM who never tracks runners. Test each change for a few matches rather than swapping half the squad after one rough loss. Chemistry styles should fix a real weakness too, not follow some copied setup. A quick CB may need strength and tackling, while a big CB might need extra pace. Once the shape feels solid, cheap Fut Coins can go toward focused upgrades instead of another full rebuild. That's when defending starts feeling calm rather than desperate.
